De Koenig Special Spider “Mike Tyson Special” is een auto uit een periode waarin snelheid, uiterlijk vertoon en maatwerk zonder veel terughoudendheid werden gecombineerd. De basis was de Ferrari Testarossa, maar bij Koenig Specials in München bleef daar vooral het uitgangspunt van over. De brede carrosserie, lage neus, grote luchtopeningen en open dak maakten er een uitgesproken jaren-tachtig creatie van.
Technisch draaide het project om de 4,9 liter twaalfcilinder van de Testarossa, door Koenig voorzien van biturbo-techniek. Afhankelijk van de uitvoering worden vermogens rond 800 pk genoemd, met nog extremere evoluties die daar bovenuit gingen. Daarmee schoof de auto ver voorbij de standaard Testarossa, die al geen bescheiden sportwagen was. De Spider-conversie maakte het geheel nog uitzonderlijker, omdat Ferrari zelf de Testarossa nooit als reguliere cabriolet leverde.
De bijnaam “Mike Tyson Special” past bij het karakter van de auto. Tyson stond eind jaren tachtig en begin jaren negentig symbool voor kracht, roem en overdaad, precies de wereld waarin Koenig Specials zich thuis voelde. De auto was geen subtiele grand tourer, maar een statement op wielen: breed, luid en gebouwd voor een eigenaar die niet onopgemerkt wilde blijven.
Voor verzamelaars is deze Koenig Special Spider vooral interessant door de combinatie van Ferrari-basis, Duitse tuningcultuur en celebrity-verhaal. Het model vertegenwoordigt een tijd waarin tuners als Koenig, Gemballa en RUF sportwagens opnieuw interpreteerden, vaak met meer vermogen en meer visuele impact dan de fabriek ooit zou aanbieden.
