De Cheetah G601 met startnummer 17 in de 24 uur van Le Mans van 1979 was een kleine, Zwitserse inschrijving in de klasse voor 2,0-liter Groep 6-sportprototypes. De auto werd door Cheetah Racing Cars ingezet voor Sandro Plastina, Philippe Roux en Mario Luini. De equipe kwalificeerde zich met een tijd van 4.12,020, goed voor de 46e plaats op de grid, terwijl de auto in de klasse S 2.0 uitkwam op Goodyear-banden.

Technisch hoorde de #17 bij de lichtste prototypes in het veld. De open Groep 6-wagen had een centraal geplaatste 2,0-liter BMW M12-viercilinder, in sommige overzichten aangeduid als BMW M12/Mader. Daarmee koos Cheetah voor een beproefd concept in een klasse waarin betrouwbaarheid vaak zwaarder woog dan pure topsnelheid. De auto reed in een zwart kleurenschema met Norwiss Jeans als zichtbare sponsor, een opvallende verschijning tussen de vele Lolas, Chevrons en andere privéprototypes in de twee-litercategorie.

De race zelf duurde voor de #17 niet lang genoeg om echt een rol van betekenis in het klasseverloop te spelen. Na 87 ronden viel de Cheetah uit. De officiële reden voor het uitvallen wordt in de bronnen omschreven als een probleem met de cilinderkop of koppakking, in elk geval een defect aan de bovenkant van het motorblok. 24h-en-piste plaatst het einde van de race rond het tiende uur, terwijl andere samenvattingen het algemener als motorpech noteren. Daarmee kwam het Le Mans-optreden van Plastina, Roux en Luini vroegtijdig ten einde.

Juist daardoor is de #17 vooral interessant als voorbeeld van het soort kleine constructeur waarmee Le Mans eind jaren zeventig nog gevuld was. De 1979-editie trok 87 aanmeldingen, waarvan 55 auto’s startten, en in die grote en gevarieerde deelnemerslijst was de Cheetah een van de bescheidener projecten. Waar Porsche vooraan de toon zette en uiteindelijk de hele top vier bezette, liet de Cheetah #17 vooral zien hoeveel ruimte er in Le Mans toen nog was voor compacte, eigenzinnige sportprototypes uit de lagere cilinderinhoudsklassen.
