Sergio Pérez maakte tijdens de Grand Prix van Australië 2026 zijn officiële debuut voor het nieuwe Cadillac Formula 1 Team. De Mexicaan kwalificeerde zich met de Cadillac MAC-26 als achttiende en reed in Melbourne de eerste Grand Prix uit de geschiedenis van het Amerikaanse fabrieksteam. Na 58 ronden werd hij als zestiende afgevlagd, op drie ronden van winnaar George Russell.
Voor Cadillac stond het openingsweekend vooral in het teken van ervaring opdoen. De MAC-26 maakte zijn racedebuut met een Ferrari-krachtbron en bleek nog snelheid tekort te komen ten opzichte van de gevestigde teams. Pérez hield zich desondanks uit de problemen en bracht de auto veilig aan de finish. Teamgenoot Valtteri Bottas viel al vroeg uit met een probleem aan het brandstofsysteem, waardoor Pérez de enige Cadillac-coureur was die de finish bereikte.
De Grand Prix kende een onrustige aanloop. Oscar Piastri crashte al tijdens de verkenningsronde en Nico Hülkenberg kwam door technische problemen helemaal niet aan de start. Tijdens de race zorgden uitvalbeurten van onder meer Isack Hadjar en Bottas voor Virtual Safety Cars, terwijl Pérez zich concentreerde op een foutloze wedstrijd. Het uitrijden van de race was voor Cadillac belangrijker dan het nemen van strategische risico's.
Cadillac verscheen in Australië met de definitieve blauw-witte kleurstelling waarmee het merk aan zijn eerste Formule 1-seizoen begon. Hoewel punten nog buiten bereik bleven, vormde de race een historische mijlpaal. Pérez schreef samen met Cadillac de eerste Grand Prix uit de geschiedenis van het team op zijn naam en legde daarmee de basis voor de verdere ontwikkeling van de Amerikaanse nieuwkomer gedurende het seizoen.
