De 1980 Argentine Grand Prix vond plaats op het Autódromo Municipal de Buenos Aires en vormde de openingsronde van het Formule 1-seizoen. Arrows Grand Prix International verscheen aan de start met de gloednieuwe Arrows A3, ontworpen door Dave Wass. Riccardo Patrese bestuurde de auto met startnummer 29 en begon hiermee aan zijn vierde volledige seizoen in de Formule 1.
De Arrows A3 was voorzien van een Ford-Cosworth DFV V8-motor, gekoppeld aan een handgeschakelde Hewland FGA 400-versnellingsbak. Het chassis was opgebouwd als aluminium monocoque, met verbeterde aerodynamica ten opzichte van de eerdere A2. De ophanging was conventioneel, zonder de radicale oplossingen van het vorige ontwerp. De wagen had een gebalanceerde, betrouwbare basis, geschikt voor het hobbelige en warme asfalt van Buenos Aires.
Patrese kwalificeerde zich als negentiende. Tijdens de race wist hij zijn positie licht te verbeteren en eindigde als negende. Ondanks het gebrek aan kampioenschapspunten liet Arrows zien dat de nieuwe A3 potentie had. De betrouwbaarheid van de wagen gaf hoop voor de rest van het seizoen.
