De McLaren F1 Roadcar uit 1992 was geen gewone supercar, maar een technisch statement uit Woking. Gordon Murray wilde een straatlegale auto bouwen met het gevoel van een pure racewagen, zonder overbodige elektronische hulp. Het resultaat was compact, licht en ongewoon doelgericht, met drie zitplaatsen en de bestuurder centraal in de cockpit.
Achter de bestuurder lag de 6,1 liter BMW S70/2 V12, een atmosferische twaalfcilinder die speciaal voor de F1 werd ontwikkeld. De motor leverde ongeveer 627 pk en was gekoppeld aan een handgeschakelde zesversnellingsbak. Door het lage gewicht, de koolstofvezel monocoque en de zuivere aerodynamica werd de F1 een van de snelste straatauto’s van zijn tijd.
De kleur Mansour Orange geeft deze uitvoering een bijzondere link met Mansour Ojjeh, de invloedrijke McLaren-aandeelhouder die nauw verbonden was met zowel het Formule 1-team als de ontwikkeling van McLaren als sportwagenmerk. De oranje tint sluit aan bij de historische McLaren-kleur, maar heeft tegelijk een eigen, persoonlijk karakter.
Als roadcar blijft de McLaren F1 bijzonder omdat hij niet uitging van luxe als hoofdzaak, maar van precisie, gewicht en mechanische betrokkenheid. In oranje Mansour-uitvoering krijgt de auto extra verzamelwaarde: niet alleen als icoon van de jaren negentig, maar ook als herinnering aan de mensen die McLaren naast het circuit vormgaven.
