De Grand Prix van Duitsland 1988 werd verreden op 24 juli op de Hockenheimring, over 44 ronden. In koele en natte omstandigheden startte Ivan Capelli met startnummer 16 voor het Leyton House March Racing Team als zevende op de grid. In een race waarin grip en zicht regelmatig wisselden, bracht hij de wagen zonder grote fouten naar de finish en eindigde als vijfde, op 1 minuut en 49,606 seconden van winnaar Ayrton Senna. Met die klassering pakte Capelli twee WK-punten.

Capelli reed met de March 881, een ontwerp van Adrian Newey. De auto had de motor in het midden van de wagen en werd aangedreven door een 3,5-liter Judd CV V8 zonder turbo. In 1988 reden de topteams nog vooral met turbomotoren, waardoor March met een atmosferische V8 op de rechte stukken meestal tekortkwam. Juist daarom viel het op dat de 881 op snelle circuits als Hockenheim toch competitief kon zijn, geholpen door een efficiënte carrosserie en weinig luchtweerstand.

Het team achter de #16 was in de kern de herboren March-formatie, die in deze periode onder de naam Leyton House March Racing Team uitkwam dankzij de Japanse hoofdsponsor Leyton House. March werkte met een relatief compacte organisatie en richtte zich op slimme aerodynamica en een lichte, strakke opbouw van het chassis. Capelli was de vaste kopman en had in 1988 Maurício Gugelmin als teamgenoot, die in Duitsland als achtste werd geklasseerd, een ronde achter de kop.

Voor Capelli paste de vijfde plaats in een seizoen waarin March zich regelmatig in de punten kon rijden, ondanks het gebrek aan turbokracht. Op een dag waarin veel rijders moesten laveren tussen spray, plassen en een opdrogende lijn, liet de #16 vooral zien dat een foutloze aanpak en constante rondetijden op Hockenheim net zo belangrijk konden zijn als pure snelheid.
