De Porsche 911 ST met startnummer 44 reed in de 24 uur van Le Mans 1971 voor de Paul Watson Race Organisation, met Paul Vestey en Richard Bond als rijders. De race werd verreden op 12 en 13 juni 1971 op het Circuit de la Sarthe en kende een uitzonderlijk grote groep Porsche 911-inschrijvingen, juist omdat de fabrieksdeelname van meerdere merken beperkt bleef. In dat decor was de opdracht voor #44 helder: een constant tempo rijden, uit de problemen blijven en de auto heel houden in een etmaal waarin verkeer en nachtwerk grote invloed hadden.
In de officiële uitslag wordt startnummer 44 vermeld als Porsche 911S in de GT +2.0-klasse, met een 2,2-liter luchtgekoelde zescilinder boxer. Het concept draaide om efficiëntie en betrouwbaarheid, met een balans die vooral rust gaf tijdens lange stints. Op Le Mans telden rem- en bandenslijtage, brandstofverbruik en het kunnen blijven rijden in druk verkeer meer dan een enkele snelle ronde.
Die aanpak werkte. De #44 reed de volledige 24 uur uit en finishte als twaalfde algemeen met 286 ronden. Daarmee hoorde de auto bij de best geklasseerde GT-inschrijvingen van het jaar, achter de klassewinnaar in GT +2.0 maar ruim binnen de groep die de volledige afstand probleemloos wist te volbrengen.
De uitslag onderstreept wat Le Mans in 1971 voor veel 911-teams betekende: geen gevecht om overall-winst, maar een uitputtingsslag waarin regelmaat en mechanische gezondheid doorslaggevend waren. Startnummer 44 leverde precies dat af, met een complete race en een klassering die het tempo van een goed voorbereide GT-911 in een sterk bezet veld bevestigde.
