De Cougar met startnummer 13 in de 24 uur van Le Mans 1988 wordt vaak in één adem genoemd met de nieuwe C22, omdat Courage dat jaar een groter programma opzette. In de officiële uitslag staat nummer 13 echter als Cougar C20B Porsche ingeschreven, ingezet door Courage Compétition (Primagaz Compétition) voor Pierre-Henri Raphanel en Michel Ferté. De race werd verreden op 11 en 12 juni 1988 op Circuit de la Sarthe, in een editie waarin Jaguar met de XJR-9LM eindelijk Porsches reeks van Le Mans-zeges doorbrak.
De C20B was een gesloten Group C1-prototype met een Porsche 3,0-liter zescilinder boxer met twin-turbo als aandrijflijn, in de basis verwant aan de 962-motorfamilie. Het concept draaide om efficiënte topsnelheid en stabiele bedrijfstemperaturen over lange stints, met een lichtgewicht monocoque en een carrosserie die vooral op de lange rechte stukken zijn waarde moest bewijzen. Binnen het Courage-programma stond de C20B naast de nieuwere C22, die in 1988 onder een ander startnummer aan de start kwam.
Voor startnummer 13 bleef het bij een korte maar veelzeggende race. Na ongeveer tien uur en 120 ronden kwam de auto uit de wedstrijd door brand, een typisch Le Mans-risico bij turboauto’s waar hittehuishouding, brandstofsystemen en pitstops elkaar onder druk zetten. Daarmee viel de #13 uit voordat een resultaat op basis van tempo en betrouwbaarheid mogelijk werd.
Juist die uitval plaatst de #13 in het bredere verhaal van 1988: een Le Mans waarin de top extreem dicht bij elkaar zat, maar waarin één incident of technisch gevolg de koers van een team onmiddellijk kon kantelen. Voor Courage Compétition betekende het ook dat het ambitieuze meerautoprogramma niet alleen om snelheid draaide, maar vooral om het overleven van een etmaal onder maximale belasting.
