De Datsun 160J met startnummer 9 in de Rallye de Portugal van 1982 werd bestuurd door Tony Pond, met Kevin Gormley als navigator. De auto werd in ook aangeduid als Nissan Violet GT, de typeaanduiding die internationaal ook voor deze rallyversie van de 160J werd gebruikt. Het duo verscheen in maart 1982 aan de start van de Portugese WK-ronde, een wedstrijd rond Estoril die over 40 klassementsproeven en 639 kilometer tegen de klok liep.
De #9 hoorde bij de beter bekeken inschrijvingen van het evenement. Pond had in die jaren al naam gemaakt als snelle en uitgesproken rijder op asfalt en gravel, terwijl Portugal bekendstond als een rally waarin snelheid, mechanische belasting en enorme publieksaantallen samenkwamen. In 1982 bleek dat opnieuw het geval: van de 91 gestarte equipes bereikten er slechts 23 de finish. Michèle Mouton en Fabrizia Pons wonnen de rally met de Audi Quattro, in een editie die vooral werd gekenmerkt door veel technische uitval.
Voor Pond en Gormley eindigde de wedstrijd voortijdig. Hun Datsun 160J, internationaal ook bekend als Nissan Violet GT, viel uit met transmissieproblemen op klassementsproef 24. Daarmee verdween startnummer 9 nog voor de slotfase uit een rally die juist voor achterwielaangedreven auto’s buitengewoon zwaar was. De opgave paste in het bredere beeld van Portugal 1982, waar niet alleen pure snelheid maar vooral overleving en mechanische degelijkheid het verschil maakten.
Toch bleef de #9 Datsun 160J een opvallende verschijning in het startveld. De auto vertegenwoordigde een fase waarin Datsun, later Nissan, nog serieus aanwezig was in het internationale rallywerk met de robuuste Violet/160J. Voor verzamelaars en rallyliefhebbers is deze Portugese uitvoering vooral interessant door de combinatie van Tony Pond, het karakteristieke profiel van de auto en de plaats van deze rally in het vroege Groep B-tijdperk, toen oudere achterwielaandrijvers nog direct tegenover de nieuwe vierwielaangedreven generatie stonden.
