Tijdens de 24 uur van Le Mans van 15 en 16 juni 1996 verscheen startnummer 44 aan de start als Ferrari F40 GTE in de klasse LMGT1. De auto kwam uit voor Ennea SRL Igol. De rijdersbezetting bestond uit Anders Olofsson, Luciano Della Noce en Carl Rosenblad. In die editie lag het tempo voorin hoog door de nieuwe generatie GT1- en prototypewagens, maar in de GT-klasse bleef betrouwbaarheid de beslissende factor.
De F40 GTE die in 1996 werd ingezet was een doorontwikkeling van de F40 voor GT1, met een Ferrari V8 met dubbele turbo en een grotere cilinderinhoud dan de straatauto. In het voortraject werd bij dit type ook gesproken over de “Evoluzione”-specificatie met verdere aanpassingen aan remmen en koeling. Daardoor was het een heel ander pakket dan een standaard F40, bedoeld om lange stints op hoge snelheid vol te houden.
In de race kwam de #44 niet tot de finish. Volgens de officiële klassering viel de Ferrari uit met motorproblemen na 98 ronden, waardoor de equipe uit beeld verdween in het laatste derde deel van de wedstrijd. Daarmee bleef een goed resultaat in LMGT1 buiten bereik, terwijl meerdere GT1-inschrijvingen dat jaar te maken kregen met mechanische problemen.
Le Mans 1996 werd uiteindelijk gewonnen door de Joest-run TWR-Porsche WSC-95 met Davy Jones, Manuel Reuter en Alexander Wurz. Voor de #44 bleef vooral de combinatie van een ambitieuze GT1-inschrijving en een vroege uitvalbeurt staan als samenvatting van een weekend waarin snelheid alleen niet genoeg was.
