De United States Grand Prix van 1988 werd op 19 juni gereden op het stratencircuit van Detroit en stond officieel als de EnICHEM Grand Prix of USA op de kalender. Over 63 ronden was het een klassiek stratencircuit: weinig uitloop, hobbelig asfalt en bochten die vooral vragen om tractie en geduld. Startnummer 29 was de Lola LC88 van Larrousse, bestuurd door coureur Yannick Dalmas. In Detroit draaide het om ritme, foutloos langs de muren rijden en het beperken van tijdverlies bij neutralisaties.
De Lola LC88 reed met een atmosferische Ford Cosworth DFZ V8 van 3,5 liter. Larrousse verscheen met een livery waarin Camel en Adia prominent aanwezig waren, met onder meer BP als vaste partner. Dalmas zette in kwalificatie een 1:46,447 neer en kwalificeerde zich als 24e, vlak voor het achterveld. De basis voor een goed resultaat was simpel: geen fouten maken, de banden heel houden en telkens weer aansluiten bij de trein van wagens.
In de race schoof Dalmas stap voor stap op terwijl meerdere wagens uitvielen of terugvielen in het verkeer. Voorin zette Ayrton Senna de toon en won, maar daarachter bleef het lang onrustig doordat het tempo werd onderbroken door incidenten en cautionfases. Dalmas profiteerde van die schommelingen, zonder zichzelf in duels vast te rijden, en hield daarmee ook de tweede Larrousse binnen bereik.
Dalmas zag de finish en werd als zevende geklasseerd na 61 ronden, met twee ronden achterstand op de winnaar. Het leverde in 1988 geen WK-punt op, omdat alleen de top zes punten kreeg, maar het resultaat gold als het beste seizoensresultaat voor de #29. In een jaar waarin Larrousse vaak afhankelijk was van uitvalbeurten vooraan, was Detroit een weekend waarin de auto en coureur het werk afmaakten en de betrouwbaarheid werd beloond.
