De Grand Prix van Japan op 6 november 1994 aan het Suzuka-circuit was het eerste Formule 1-optreden van Mika Salo in de Lotus 109 #11. Lotus had Éric Bernard vervangen door Salo na zijn Japanse F3000 ervaring en vertrouwdheid met de baan. Hij kwalificeerde op de 25e plaats, 4,596 seconden achter pole-setter Michael Schumacher.
In de zware regenval tijdens de start verloren diverse coureurs de controle. Bij Salo verliep het weekend ongewoon schoon, hij bleef op de baan terwijl anderen spinnen of uitvielen. Na de rode vlag en het herstarten van de race op geaggregeerde tijden, promoveerde hij langzaam.
Uiteindelijk finishte Salo als tiende, een ronde achter winnaar Damon Hill, op de Lotus 109 aangedreven door een Mugen-Honda V10. Lotus scoorde geen punten in de race, maar het optreden van Salo trok wel positieve aandacht als debutant die niet foutte in barre omstandigheden.
De Lotus 109 was een in 1994 ontwikkelde auto met 725 pk bij 13 500 tpm, ontworpen door Peter Wright en Chris Murphy. Het chassis was gebaseerd op de Lotus 107C, maar kende beperkte ontwikkeling en geen racepunten. De Japanse race was Salo’s eerste van twee starts met die wagen; in Australië kreeg hij te kampen met technische problemen en viel uit.
