Opel Ascona 400 met startnummer 2 won de Marlboro Safari Rally 1983 met Ari Vatanen en Terry Harryman. Deze prestatie tijdens het WK Rally 1983 gold als een van de zwaarste overwinningen van het seizoen, door extreme hitte, ruig terrein en lange etappes in Kenia. De auto werd ingezet door Opel Team Europe onder leiding van Walter Röhrl’s voormalige teammanager Tony Fall.De Ascona 400 beschikte over een 2,4-liter viercilinder motor met circa 255 pk, gekoppeld aan achterwielaandrijving. De auto was ontwikkeld in samenwerking met Irmscher en Cosworth en had een versterkt chassis, extra luchtinlaten, snorkel en verstralers voor optimale prestaties onder Afrikaanse omstandigheden. Betrouwbaarheid en eenvoudige mechaniek bleken sleutel tot succes.De wagen reed in de kleuren van hoofdsponsor Rothmans, met kenmerkende donkerblauw-wit-goud striping en prominente logo’s op motorkap en flanken. Deze kleurstelling was typerend voor Opel’s rallycampagnes begin jaren tachtig.
