Tijdens de derde editie van de Rally van Argentinië in 1984 verscheen het team Audi Sport met de iconische Audi Quattro A2 aan de start, bestuurd door Jorge Recalde en genavigeerd door Jorge Del Buono. Deze manche van het Wereldkampioenschap Rally vond plaats op ruw terrein en kende uitdagende weersomstandigheden. De Audi met startnummer 3 vertegenwoordigde het fabrieksteam in een van de zwaarste Zuid-Amerikaanse rally’s van het seizoen.
Onder de motorkap van de Quattro A2 lag een krachtige 2,1-liter vijfcilinder turbomotor met permanente vierwielaandrijving, een innovatie die Audi’s dominantie in de rallysport markeerde. Dankzij de robuuste aandrijflijn en geavanceerde technologieën wist de wagen uitstekend te presteren op gravel, modder en rivierdoorwadingen, die typerend zijn voor de Argentijnse etappes.
Jorge Recalde, destijds de lokale held, wist samen met zijn bijrijder de rally te beëindigen op een indrukwekkende vierde plaats. De prestatie van het Argentijnse duo was een hoogtepunt in hun carrière en bevestigde de betrouwbaarheid en competitiviteit van het Audi-team in internationale rally’s.
