De Mini Cooper S met startnummer 52, bestuurd door Timo Mäkinen en navigator Paul Easter, behaalde de overwinning in de Rallye Automobile de Monte-Carlo van 1965. Deze klassieker werd verreden onder zware winterse omstandigheden, met besneeuwde bergpassen en ijzige nachtetappes. De Finse coureur reed voor het officiële British Motor Corporation (BMC) Works Team en schreef daarmee geschiedenis voor de Mini.
Onder de motorkap bevond zich een 1275cc viercilindermotor met een vermogen van circa 90 pk. Dankzij het lichte gewicht, de korte wielbasis en het voorwielaandrijvingssysteem beschikte de Mini Cooper S over uitstekende tractie en wendbaarheid, essentieel op het gladde en bochtige parcours van de Monte Carlo Rally. Deze technische eigenschappen gaven Mäkinen en Easter een strategisch voordeel in de sneeuw.
Met deze overwinning pakte het BMC Works Team de eerste plaats in het algemeen klassement van de rally. Na afloop van het evenement voerden Mäkinen en het team ook het voorlopige klassement van het Europees Rallykampioenschap aan. De overwinning markeerde het begin van een iconische periode waarin de Mini Cooper S uitgroeide tot een legende in de rallysport.
