George Russell won op 15 juni 2025 de Grand Prix van Canada in zijn Mercedes-W16 (auto #63). Hij startte van pole position en hield Max Verstappen van Red Bull consequent achter zich. Russell nam een tweestopstrategie en was in staat zijn voordeel te behouden toen hij pas op ronde 43 zijn laatste pitstop maakte. Daarmee behaalde hij zijn eerste seizoenszege en de eerste overwinning van Mercedes in 2025.
Hij noteerde de snelste ronde op ronde 63 met een tijd van 1:14.119 min. Achter Russell finishte Verstappen op slechts 0,228 seconden. Rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli completeerde het podium voor Mercedes en werd daarmee de derde-jongste podiumfinisher in de Formule 1.
De race kende in de slotfase drama toen Lando Norris een inhaalpoging op teamgenoot Oscar Piastri misrekende, hun botsing leidde tot een safety car en het einde van race onder gele vlag. Piastri pakte nog vierde plaats en breidde zijn voorsprong in het kampioenschap uit tot 22 punten op Norris. Russell beschreef de W16 na afloop als 'waarschijnlijk de snelste auto op het veld', onderstrepende dat het startracen en wagenbeheer perfect overeenkwamen.
