De Genesis GMR-001 Hypercar met startnummer 17 markeert in 2026 een nieuw hoofdstuk in het FIA World Endurance Championship. Genesis Magma Racing treedt voor het eerst aan in de Hypercar-klasse en doet dat niet met een voorzichtige tussenstap, maar met een LMDh-prototype dat meteen tussen gevestigde merken als Ferrari, Toyota, Cadillac, Peugeot en BMW wordt gezet. De #17 wordt bemand door André Lotterer, Pipo Derani en Mathys Jaubert, een bezetting waarin ervaring en jeugd bewust naast elkaar zijn geplaatst.
De GMR-001 is ontwikkeld rond een chassis van ORECA en gebruikt een Genesis G8MR 3,2 liter turbo-V8, gebaseerd op Hyundai Motorsports viercilinder uit het WRC. De auto volgt het LMDh-reglement, met een hybride aandrijflijn en Michelin-banden. Opvallend aan het ontwerp zijn de Two-Line koplampen, de lage carrosserie en de Koreaanse Magma-signatuur in de kleurstelling. De auto oogt daardoor duidelijk als een Genesis, maar blijft in zijn basis vooral een functionele langeafstandsracer.
Bij het debuut in de 6 uur van Imola koos Genesis voor een nuchtere aanpak. Finishen, data verzamelen en fouten vermijden waren belangrijker dan meteen forceren. De #17 van Derani, Jaubert en Lotterer kwam zonder grote problemen aan de finish en pakte kort daarna op Spa-Francorchamps de eerste WEC-punten voor het nieuwe programma met een achtste plaats.
Voor de #17 is 2026 daarmee vooral een leerjaar met zichtbaar resultaat. Lotterer brengt Le Mans-ervaring en technische rust, Derani kent het moderne prototypewerk uit IMSA en Jaubert krijgt als jonge rijder de kans om zich in de hoogste klasse te bewijzen. De Genesis GMR-001 #17 staat daardoor voor een ambitieus debuutproject: nog niet de maatstaf in Hypercar, wel een auto die vanaf de eerste races serieus genomen moet worden.
