De Porsche 911 GT2 met startnummer 61 verscheen in de 24 uur van Le Mans 1998 onder de vlag van Krauss Race Sports International. Michael Trunk, Ernst Palmberger en Bernhard Müller vormden de rijdersbezetting in de LMGT2-klasse, in een editie die op 6 en 7 juni werd verreden. Het werd een Le Mans waarin de aandacht vaak naar de topklasse ging, maar waarin GT2-teams juist moesten presteren door foutloos rijden, zuinig omgaan met materiaal en het verkeer van snellere prototypes en GT1-auto’s goed te lezen.
De 911 GT2 was in deze periode de doorontwikkeling van Porsches 911-racerij voor internationale GT-competitie, met een 3,6-liter zescilinder boxer met turbo als kern. Het recept combineerde hoge trekkracht en een compacte lay-out met een afstelling die gericht was op constante kruissnelheid, koeling en betrouwbaarheid tijdens lange stints. In Le Mans betekende dat vooral: temperatuurmanagement, stabiele rem- en bandenslijtage en zo min mogelijk tijdverlies in de pits.
Voor startnummer 61 viel die duurtest vroegtijdig uiteen. De auto viel uit met motorproblemen na 71 ronden, op een moment dat de wedstrijd nog geen echte nachtelijke uitputtingsslag was geworden. Daarmee bleef het bij een korte race voor een auto die in GT2 juist is gebouwd om urenlang op hetzelfde ritme te functioneren.
De uitval van de #61 past in het beeld van Le Mans 1998 als race waarin technische marges klein waren, niet alleen in de strijd om de overall-zege maar ook in de klassen. Voor een GT2-inschrijving was uitrijden vaak de helft van het werk, en precies dat doel bleef in dit geval buiten bereik.
