De Grand Prix van Miami 2025 kreeg een onverwachte wending nog vóór de lichten op groen gingen. De Italiaan Kimi Antonelli zette tijdens de sprintkwalificatie de Mercedes AMG W16 op pole position. Met een ronde van 1’26”482 was hij 0,045 seconde sneller dan Oscar Piastri in de McLaren. Daarmee schreef de achttienjarige coureur Formule 1-geschiedenis: hij werd de jongste polesitter ooit in een sprintkwalificatie en de eerste Italiaan met een pole sinds Giancarlo Fisichella in 2009.
De Mercedes W16 E Performance, die dit seizoen debuteerde, is ontwikkeld om de tekortkomingen van de W15 weg te werken. Vrijwel alle aerodynamische oppervlakken zijn aangepast en de voorwielophanging is herzien. De wagen combineert een 1,6 liter V6-turbomotor met hybride onderdelen, goed voor maximaal 15.000 toeren per minuut. Op de smalle en bochtige lay-out in Miami bleek de auto uitstekend in balans, wat Antonelli in staat stelde om het maximale uit de kwalificatie te halen.
Voor Mercedes betekende de pole position meer dan een goede uitgangspositie. Na een reeks moeilijke seizoenen gold het resultaat als bevestiging dat de inspanningen in Brackley vruchten afwerpen. Voor Antonelli zelf was het een mijlpaal: nauwelijks enkele races in zijn debuutjaar reed hij zich al de recordboeken in. Na afloop verklaarde hij dat hij het resultaat niet had verwacht, maar dat hij zich de hele dag sterk had gevoeld in de auto.
De pole in Miami zette het team op scherp voor de rest van het weekend. Waar concurrenten vooral naar Red Bull en McLaren keken, werd duidelijk dat ook Mercedes met Antonelli opnieuw tot de kanshebbers gerekend moest worden.
