De Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupé #5 van Dan Gurney en Bob Bondurant reed in de 24 uur van Le Mans 1964 voor Shelby-American Inc. In de editie van 20 en 21 juni 1964 kwam de auto als vierde algemeen aan de finish met 334 ronden, terwijl tegelijk de winst in de GT 5.0-klasse werd veiliggesteld. De race werd overall gewonnen door de Ferrari 275 P #20 van Nino Vaccarella en Jean Guichet met 349 ronden.
De #5 was een Daytona Coupé op chassis CSX2299 met een Ford 4,7-liter V8. In deze configuratie lag de nadruk op hoge kruissnelheid op de rechte stukken en stabiele rondetijden over lange stints. De gesloten coupé-carrosserie was ontwikkeld om de luchtweerstand te beperken ten opzichte van de open Cobra, terwijl de hoge daklijn van CSX2299 ook in de cockpitindeling en rijpositie meespeelde.
De omstandigheden in 1964 maakten het een race waarin een foutloze uitvoering belangrijker was dan incidentele snelheid. In de nacht was het ongebruikelijk koud met mistbanken, en meerdere auto’s kregen te maken met technische tegenslag of incidenten. Gurney en Bondurant hielden het tempo beheerst en kwamen ondanks hoge motortemperaturen in de tweede racedag zonder grote stilstand door, wat de basis legde voor de klassezege en de vierde plaats.
Met die uitslag doorbrak de Daytona Coupé de dominantie van Ferrari in de GT-categorie in Le Mans. De #5 eindigde als eerste GT-auto en bleef de dichtstbijzijnde Ferrari 250 GTO’s nipt voor, wat de race van 1964 een belangrijk hoofdstuk maakt in de geschiedenis van de Shelby Coupés en hun rol in het GT-programma van dat seizoen.
