De 1978 United States Grand Prix werd op 1 oktober 1978 verreden op Watkins Glen in de staat New York, als de oostelijke Amerikaanse race naast Long Beach. De wedstrijd droeg de officiële naam XXI Toyota United States Grand Prix en trok een recordpubliek van meer dan 150.000 toeschouwers. Over 59 ronden (320,67 km) bleef het droog onder een bewolkte lucht. Mario Andretti zette de Lotus 79 op pole, maar in de race ging de winst naar Carlos Reutemann in de Ferrari 312 T3.
Startnummer 27 was de Williams FW06 van Alan Jones, die zich als derde kwalificeerde met 1:39,742. Deze auto was het eerste volledig eigen ontwerp van Williams Grand Prix Engineering, met een aluminium monocoque en de 3,0-liter Ford Cosworth DFV V8 als krachtbron. De aandrijflijn werd gecombineerd met een handgeschakelde raceversnellingsbak en het pakket was opgezet rond een laag gewicht en eenvoudige, betrouwbare mechanica. Jones reed op Goodyear-banden; de wagen droeg in 1978 prominent de Fly Saudia-sponsoring.

Jody Scheckter completeerde het podium met de Wolf WR6, terwijl Jean-Pierre Jabouille met de Renault RS01 als vierde binnenkwam.
De wedstrijd kende een hoog uitvalspercentage. Andretti viel uit met motorproblemen en ook Niki Lauda en Gilles Villeneuve haalden de finish niet. Jean-Pierre Jarier noteerde de snelste ronde met 1:39,557 in ronde 55. Voor startnummer 27 bleef vooral het sportieve signaal staan: een podium dat de doorbraak van Williams’ eerste eigen auto onderstreepte.
