De Williams met startnummer 49, bestuurd door Giacomo Agostini, verscheen in 1979 aan de start van de Race of Champions op Brands Hatch. Deze wedstrijd werd op 15-04-1979 verreden als een niet-kampioenschapsrace, maar trok een volwaardig Formule 1-veld. Agostini kwam uit een andere tak van de autosport en reed hier in een Williams die normaal in het Grand Prix-seizoen werd ingezet, waardoor zijn deelname meteen opviel.
De auto was de Williams FW06 met de Ford Cosworth DFV, een atmosferische 3,0-liter V8. In dit tijdperk stond de DFV bekend om zijn brede inzetbaarheid en een karakter dat goed paste bij een compact, licht chassis. Op Brands Hatch draaide het om balans in snelle richtingswisselingen, tractie uit langzamere bochten en remstabiliteit, waardoor een voorspelbare aandrijflijn en een rustig rijgedrag belangrijk waren over een volledige raceafstand.
Agostini kwalificeerde met de #49 als vijftiende, waarna hij door een wijziging in de startopstelling als zestiende vertrok. In de race reed hij 38 ronden en werd als elfde geklasseerd, op twee ronden achterstand van de winnaar. Die winnaar was Gilles Villeneuve, gevolgd door Nelson Piquet en Mario Andretti. Voor Williams betekende het vooral een degelijke race zonder grote problemen, met een resultaat dat de auto over de streep bracht in een sterk bezet veld.
