De Grand Prix van Zweden van 1976, verreden op 13 juni op het circuit van Anderstorp, werd een van de meest opmerkelijke races uit het Formule 1-seizoen. Het vlakke en technische karakter van het circuit stelde hoge eisen aan tractie en stabiliteit. In dat veld startte met nummer 3 de Tyrrell P34 van Jody Scheckter, een auto die direct opviel door zijn afwijkende concept met vier kleine voorwielen.
De Tyrrell P34 was ontworpen door Derek Gardner en week fundamenteel af van de conventionele Formule 1-auto’s van die tijd. De wagen gebruikte vier 10-inch voorwielen om de luchtweerstand te verminderen en tegelijkertijd het contactoppervlak met het asfalt te vergroten. Achterin lag de bekende 3,0 liter Ford Cosworth DFV V8-motor, gekoppeld aan een handgeschakelde versnellingsbak. De combinatie van het zeswielige concept en de beproefde aandrijflijn gaf de auto een duidelijke technische eigen identiteit.
Tijdens de race wist Scheckter met startnummer 3 het potentieel van de P34 volledig te benutten. Hij reed een constante wedstrijd en profiteerde van de mechanische grip en stabiliteit van de auto, vooral in de langzame en middelhoge bochten van Anderstorp. Samen met teamgenoot Patrick Depailler, die als tweede finishte, zorgde hij voor een één-twee resultaat voor Tyrrell. Voor Scheckter betekende dit zijn derde overwinning in de Formule 1 en de enige Grand Prix-zege voor de zeswielige Tyrrell.
De overwinning in Zweden bleef het hoogtepunt van het P34-project. Ondanks het succes bleek de verdere ontwikkeling complex, onder meer door bandentechnische beperkingen. Toch staat de Grand Prix van Zweden 1976 met nummer 3 symbool voor een zeldzaam moment waarop een radicale technische oplossing direct werd beloond met een overwinning op het hoogste niveau van de autosport.
