De Grand Prix van België 1976 werd verreden op 16 mei op het circuit van Zolder, dat in die periode de afwisseling met Spa-Francorchamps vormde op de Formule 1-kalender. Het circuit kenmerkte zich door korte rechte stukken en technische bochtencombinaties, waardoor balans en tractie belangrijker waren dan pure topsnelheid. In dat veld verscheen startnummer 3 met de Tyrrell P34, bestuurd door Jody Scheckter.
De Tyrrell P34 was een van de opvallendste ontwerpen van het seizoen. De wagen, ontwikkeld onder leiding van ontwerper Derek Gardner, beschikte over vier kleine voorwielen in plaats van twee conventionele. Het idee was om de frontale luchtweerstand te verkleinen en tegelijkertijd het contactoppervlak met het asfalt te vergroten. De aandrijving kwam van de Ford Cosworth DFV, een 3,0 liter V8-motor die in die periode het merendeel van het veld aandreef.
Tijdens de race op Zolder liet Scheckter zien dat het concept ook op een technisch circuit competitief kon zijn. Hij reed een constante wedstrijd en wist zich in de voorste groep te handhaven. De bandenslijtage op de kleinere voorbanden bleef een aandachtspunt, maar de mechanische grip gaf de auto duidelijke voordelen in de langzamere secties van het circuit.
Scheckter finishte de Grand Prix als vierde, net buiten het podium, maar wel met een resultaat dat het potentieel van de P34 bevestigde. De race in België vormde daarmee een van de momenten in het seizoen waarin het zeswielige concept zich als serieuze uitdager liet zien, nog vóór de overwinning later dat jaar in Zweden het ontwerp definitief op de kaart zette.
