De Lotus 98T met startnummer 12 van Ayrton Senna reed de United States Grand Prix 1986 op 22-06-1986 op het stratencircuit van Detroit. Senna vertrok vanaf poleposition en won na 63 ronden, met Jacques Laffite als tweede en Alain Prost als derde. Het was een wedstrijd waarin track position belangrijk bleef, omdat inhalen op het Detroit-circuit lastig was en neutralisaties het ritme konden breken.
De 98T was in 1986 uitgerust met de Renault EF15B, een 1,5-liter V6 turbo. Op een bochtig stratencircuit kwam het aan op tractie en doseerbaarheid, met constante aandacht voor koeling, remmen en brandstofverbruik. Dat maakte de afstelling van de turborespons en de mechanische grip minstens zo belangrijk als piekvermogen, zeker wanneer de baan glad werd door vuil en rubberopbouw.
In de race kreeg Senna te maken met een onrustige fase met gele vlaggen en incidenten, terwijl achter hem de posities verschoven door problemen en tijdverlies bij rivalen. Ondanks de druk bleef de #12 uit de grote problemen en hield Senna het tempo onder controle tot de finish, waarmee Lotus-Renault de maximale punten pakte op een circuit waar fouten snel worden afgestraft.
