De Duitse Grand Prix van 1968 op de Nürburgring Nordschleife werd op 04-08-1968 verreden onder zeer natte en mistige omstandigheden. Startnummer 3 was de Lotus-Ford van Graham Hill, die in deze race een sleutelrol speelde in de strijd om het podium. Hill kwalificeerde als vierde en kwam na 14 ronden als tweede over de streep, op 4:03,2 achter winnaar Jackie Stewart.
De auto van Hill was de Lotus 49B van Gold Leaf Team Lotus, aangedreven door de Ford Cosworth DFV 3,0-liter V8. Op de 22,835 km lange Nordschleife telden tractie, zicht en mechanische rust meer dan pure snelheid. De DFV, gecombineerd met een relatief licht chassis, gaf Lotus de mogelijkheid om een constant ritme aan te houden in omstandigheden waarin fouten direct eindigden in tijdverlies of uitval.
In de race zelf moest Hill vooral schade beperken en de auto op de baan houden, terwijl het zicht op delen van het circuit extreem beperkt was.
