Startnummer 20 in de Rallye Automobile de Monte-Carlo 1975 was de Renault 17 Gordini van Jean-François Piot en Jean de Alexandris. In een editie die van 15 tot en met 23 januari werd verreden en wisselende omstandigheden kende, reed de equipe een constante rally en eindigde als vijfde algemeen. De overwinning ging naar Sandro Munari in de Lancia Stratos HF, maar de #20 wist zich juist te onderscheiden door het tempo over de hele week vast te houden en de grootste problemen te vermijden.
De Renault 17 Gordini was in deze periode gebaseerd op de 1,6-liter viercilinder-in-lijn, met een cilinderinhoud van 1605 cc. In de Gordini-uitvoering werd vaak gebruikgemaakt van Bosch D-Jetronic injectie, gecombineerd met een set-up die gericht was op koppel en controle op wisselende grip. Dat paste bij Monte-Carlo, waar asfalt, koude temperaturen en lokale gladheid vragen om doseerbaarheid en voorspelbaar gedrag in plaats van alleen piekvermogen.
In het verloop van de rally betekende dat: lange etappes rijden met beperkte marges, scherp omgaan met bandenkeuze en de auto heel houden in de nachtelijke secties. Terwijl meerdere concurrenten tijd verloren door fouten of techniek, bleef de Renault 17 Gordini van Piot en de Alexandris in het ritme. Het resultaat was een top-5 in een WRC-opening die bekendstaat om zijn hoge moeilijkheidsgraad en het verschil dat één verkeerde beslissing kan maken.
