De European Grand Prix 1983 (officieel: John Player Grand Prix of Europe) werd op 25-09-1983 verreden op Brands Hatch. In auto #30 reed Thierry Boutsen voor Arrows Racing Team met de Arrows A6-Ford. Boutsen kwalificeerde als 18e en begon de race vanuit het middenveld, in een wedstrijd waarin inhalen op Brands Hatch vaak neerkwam op timing en het benutten van verkeer.
De Arrows A6 was in 1983 een compacte constructie met een klassieke 3,0-liter Ford Cosworth V8. In een seizoen waarin turbo’s steeds nadrukkelijker het tempo bepaalden, draaide het voor dit type atmosferische auto vooral om balans, bandenbehoud en het voorkomen van tijdverlies door kleine problemen of spins. Het chassisconcept was gericht op voorspelbaar gedrag, wat op Brands Hatch met zijn snelle richtingswisselingen en hoogteverschillen direct terugkomt in rondetijd en bandenslijtage.
In de race reed Boutsen 75 van de 76 ronden en werd als elfde geklasseerd, op één ronde van de winnaar. Daarmee bleef #30 net buiten de punten, maar het resultaat liet wel zien dat de auto een volledige Grand Prix kon uitrijden op een circuit waar fouten snel worden afgestraft. De overwinning ging naar Nelson Piquet (Brabham-BMW), vóór Alain Prost (Renault) en Nigel Mansell (Lotus-Renault).
