De auto met startnummer 7 in de Grand Prix van Monaco 1979 was de McLaren M28C-Ford van John Watson. De race werd verreden op 27-05-1979 over 76 ronden op het stratencircuit van Monte Carlo. Watson kwalificeerde als 14e, maar reed in een wedstrijd met een hoog uitvalpercentage naar plaats vier en pakte daarmee 3 WK-punten.
De M28C gebruikte de beproefde Ford Cosworth DFV, een 3,0-liter V8, in combinatie met een klassieke grondeffect-era afstelling die op Monaco vooral om mechanische grip en tractie draaide. Op een circuit waar inhalen lastig is, werd de race vaak beslist door foutloos door verkeer komen, de auto uit de barrières houden en pitwerk zonder tijdverlies. Watsons resultaat kwam voort uit regelmaat en het vermijden van problemen die meerdere concurrenten wél troffen.
Voorin won Jody Scheckter met de Ferrari, terwijl Clay Regazzoni in de Williams tweede werd en Carlos Reutemann met Lotus derde. Watson bracht de #7 na 76 ronden over de streep als beste McLaren van de dag, op 41,310 seconden van de winnaar. Het is een uitslag die Monaco goed typeert: een startpositie buiten de top tien is niet per definitie het einde, zolang de auto heel blijft en het tempo constant is.
