Tijdens de Britse Grand Prix van 22-07-1984 op Brands Hatch reed startnummer 21 voor Spirit Racing met Huub Rothengatter. In een race die door een startcrash al na 11 ronden werd stilgelegd en vervolgens over de resterende afstand werd hervat, hield de Spirit zich uit de grootste problemen, maar kwam net tekort voor een officiële klassering. Rothengatter werd als niet geklasseerd genoteerd na 62 ronden, op 9 ronden van de winnaar.
De auto was de Spirit 101B, gebouwd rond de Hart 415T: een 1,5-liter viercilinder turbo die in 1984 bekendstond om zijn compacte bouw en efficiënte vermogensafgifte, maar ook om de smalle marges in koeling en bedrijfszekerheid in verkeer. Voor Spirit betekende dat een weekend waarin kwalificatie vooral om het halen van de grid ging, terwijl in de race het tempo moest worden afgestemd op bandenslijtage, turbodruk en het vermijden van tijdverlies door pitstops. Rothengatter kwalificeerde als 22e.
De uitslag laat zien hoe hard het middenveld in 1984 kon zijn: zelfs met een finish in zicht en een redelijk constant aantal ronden, viel een auto buiten de officiële klassering wanneer de afstand tekort bleef. Voor #21 werd Brands Hatch daarmee vooral een voorbeeld van een Spirit-Hart die de druk van een chaotische Grand Prix grotendeels doorstond, maar net niet ver genoeg kwam om in de eindlijst als finisher te tellen.
