Tijdens de Targa Florio van 1968 verscheen de Porsche 907 met startnummer 222 aan de start namens Porsche System Engineering. Deze wagen werd bestuurd door Hans Herrmann en Jochen Neerpasch. Het duo bracht een sterke combinatie van ervaring en precisie mee op het veeleisende stratencircuit van Sicilië, waar smalle wegen, hoogteverschillen en lange rondetijden kenmerkend zijn.
De Porsche 907 werd aangedreven door een 2.2 liter achtcilinder boxermotor die ongeveer 270 pk leverde. Dankzij het lichte chassis en de gestroomlijnde carrosserie bood de auto een ideale balans voor de technische uitdagingen van de Targa Florio. De krachtbron was gekoppeld aan een handgeschakelde vijfversnellingsbak en zorgde voor constante prestaties tijdens de lange afstand van meer dan 700 kilometer.
Herrmann en Neerpasch reden een foutloze race en brachten de #222 over de finish op een knappe vierde plaats algemeen. Daarmee onderstreepte het Porsche-team opnieuw zijn dominantie in deze periode. De race werd gewonnen door Vaccarella en Elford in een andere Porsche 907, waarmee Porsche de volledige top van het klassement beheerste.
