In 1963 testte Honda hun eerste Formule 1-prototype, de RA270, als voorbereiding op deelname aan het wereldkampioenschap. De RA270 was voorzien van een innovatieve 1.5 liter V12-motor met transversale plaatsing, gekoppeld aan een sequentiële versnellingsbak. De wagen werd ontwikkeld onder de vlag van Honda R&D en was bedoeld als technologische doorbraak, met een focus op lichtgewichtconstructie en een lage gewichtsverdeling.
Tijdens testwerkzaamheden op Suzuka en in Japanse testfaciliteiten werd de auto bestuurd door de Australische coureur Jack Brabham.
