De McLaren M23 met startnummer 30 werd tijdens de Canadese Grand Prix van 1977 bestuurd door de Amerikaanse coureur Brett Lunger. Het voertuig maakte deel uit van het team Chesterfield Racing, een privé-ingeschreven McLaren onder leiding van Bob Sparshott. Deze race op het circuit van Mosport Park betekende een van Lungers laatste optredens in de Formule 1, in een seizoen waarin hij regelmatig deelnam aan Grands Prix met oudere McLaren-machines.
De M23 werd aangedreven door de beproefde Ford-Cosworth DFV V8-motor met een inhoud van 2993 cc. Dit atmosferisch blok leverde rond de 485 pk en was gekoppeld aan een handgeschakelde Hewland versnellingsbak. Het chassis was opgebouwd rond een aluminium monocoque, voorzien van een lage neus, kleine sidepods en een achtervleugelconfiguratie passend bij de downforcebehoeften van het snelle en bochtige Mosport.
Tijdens de race in Canada op 9 oktober 1977 wist Brett Lunger zich als 21e te kwalificeren. In de wedstrijd zelf klom hij op naar de 16e positie aan de finish, op vier ronden achterstand van winnaar Jody Scheckter. De betrouwbaarheid van de M23, gecombineerd met Lunger's ervaring, leverde een solide resultaat op in een veld dat werd gedomineerd door fabrieksinschrijvingen van Ferrari, Lotus en Wolf.
