De 1961 Italiaanse Grand Prix op Monza was de voorlaatste ronde van het Formule 1-seizoen. In deze race nam de Brit Innes Ireland deel met startnummer 38, rijdend voor het team van Lotus Cars. De race werd verreden op het traditionele hogesnelheidscircuit met de iconische kombaansecties, wat leidde tot een spectaculaire wedstrijd met een bijzonder hoge gemiddelde snelheid.
Innes Ireland bestuurde de Lotus 21, een openwieler voorzien van een 1.5 liter Coventry Climax FPF viercilindermotor.
