De Race of Champions van 1979 vond plaats op het legendarische circuit van Brands Hatch en bracht enkele van de grootste namen in de Formule 1 samen voor een niet-kampioenschapsrace. Eén van de opvallende deelnemers was de Italiaanse coureur Giacomo Agostini, die aantrad met de Williams FW06 met startnummer 27. Dit was een unieke gelegenheid waarbij Agostini, vooral bekend als meervoudig wereldkampioen in de motorsport, de overstap maakte naar de Formule 1 in een eenmalige deelname voor het team van Frank Williams.
De Williams FW06 was uitgerust met de vertrouwde Ford Cosworth DFV V8-motor, een krachtbron die eind jaren ’70 dominant was in de Formule 1.
