De Shadow DN8 met startnummer 16 werd ingezet tijdens de 1976 Canadian Grand Prix, onderdeel van het FIA Formule 1 Wereldkampioenschap. Het team Shadow Racing Cars schreef de wagen in voor de Britse coureur Tom Pryce, die sinds 1974 vast deel uitmaakte van het team. De race werd verreden op het Mosport Park-circuit in Ontario en was de voorlaatste ronde van het seizoen.
De DN8 was een verdere doorontwikkeling binnen de Shadow-stal, uitgerust met een Ford Cosworth DFV 3.0 V8-motor. Deze atmosferische krachtbron gold als de standaardkeuze voor veel onafhankelijke teams in die periode.
