De March 821 met startnummer 18 nam deel aan de 1982 Grand Prix van Long Beach, een van de openingsrondes van het Formule 1-seizoen dat jaar. Het Britse RAM Racing team schreef de auto in voor de Braziliaanse coureur Raul Boesel. De race op het stratencircuit van Long Beach was een uitdagende krachtmeting, waar precisie en uithoudingsvermogen cruciaal waren. Boesel, een voormalig Formule 3-kampioen, maakte in 1982 zijn debuutseizoen in de Formule 1.
De March 821 werd aangedreven door de veelgebruikte 3.0 liter Ford Cosworth DFV V8-motor, een atmosferisch krachtbron die zijn sporen reeds had verdiend in eerdere seizoenen. Ondanks de beproefde techniek kampte het chassis met structurele tekortkomingen en beperkte competitiviteit. De combinatie van het RAM-team en het March-chassis kon in Long Beach geen aanspraak maken op punten, mede door de technische achterstand ten opzichte van de gevestigde topteams.
Tijdens het raceweekend in Californië kwalificeerde Boesel zich achterin het veld. De Braziliaan reed een gedegen openingsfase, maar moest vroegtijdig opgeven vanwege mechanische problemen. De race werd uiteindelijk gewonnen door Niki Lauda in zijn McLaren MP4/1, waarmee Boesel’s debuutjaar zich kenmerkte door leerzame maar moeizame ervaringen in het achterveld.
