De Grand Prix van Long Beach 1979 vond plaats op het iconische stratencircuit in Californië en was een van de kleurrijkste races van dat Formule 1-seizoen. Alan Jones verscheen aan de start met zijn Williams FW06, uitgerust met een Ford Cosworth DFV V8. Met startnummer 27 vertegenwoordigde hij het team van Williams Grand Prix Engineering, dat volop in ontwikkeling was en langzaam zijn plek in de top begon op te eisen.
De FW06 was compact en licht, gebouwd rond een aluminium monocoque chassis en voorzien van een vijfversnellingsbak van Hewland. De bekende Cosworth V8 leverde zo’n 485 pk, genoeg om op een bochtig stratencircuit als Long Beach goed uit de verf te komen. Het ontwerp was simpel maar doeltreffend – precies wat het team op dat moment nodig had, vlak voordat de revolutionaire FW07 werd geïntroduceerd.
Jones reed een sterke race en beloonde het team met een podiumplaats. Hij kwam als derde over de finish, achter de twee Ferrari’s van Villeneuve en Scheckter. Het was een belangrijke opsteker voor Williams en gaf een voorproefje van de successen die nog zouden volgen. Voor Jones betekende het het begin van een reeks indrukwekkende prestaties dat jaar.
