De Arrows A3 met startnummer 29 werd in de 1981 South African Grand Prix bestuurd door Riccardo Patrese. Het team heette officieel Arrows Racing Team en stond onder leiding van Jackie Oliver. De Zuid-Afrikaanse Grand Prix op Kyalami werd dat jaar verreden als een niet-kampioenschapsrace, na een conflict tussen de FISA en FOCA. Desondanks namen veel vooraanstaande teams deel, waaronder Arrows met hun vaste coureur Patrese.
