Tijdens de 1984 British Grand Prix kwam de Ligier JS23 met startnummer 25 in actie namens het Franse team Ligier Gitanes. De wagen werd bestuurd door François Hesnault, een jonge debutant die dat seizoen zijn entree maakte in de Formule 1. Brands Hatch vormde het decor voor deze tiende ronde van het wereldkampioenschap, met een sterk bezet veld en complexe raceomstandigheden.
De Ligier JS23 beschikte over een Renault-Gordini EF4 V6 turbomotor, die in kwalificatietrim tot 750 pk kon leveren. Het chassis was een aluminium monocoque met kenmerkende hoekige lijnen en compacte sidepods. Ondanks het vermogen en de ervaring van het team slaagde Ligier er zelden in om de strijd aan te gaan met de leidende constructeurs van dat jaar.
