Monza "Test Session" WTCC 1987
De BMW M3 E30 debuteerde in 1987 als homologatiemodel voor Groep A-races en groeide uit tot een icoon in de toerwagenracerij. In de aanloop naar het wereldkampioenschap toerwagens (WTCC) testte BMW diverse rijdercombinaties en technische configuraties. Tijdens een test op Monza in 1987 nam drievoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1 Niki Lauda plaats achter het stuur van de M3 met het startnummer 51.
De auto was uitgerust met de BMW S14 viercilindermotor van 2,3 liter, die oorspronkelijk werd afgeleid van de zescilinder M88. In WTCC-configuratie leverde het blok circa 300 pk, gekoppeld aan een handgeschakelde vijfbak. De M3 beschikte over een uitgebalanceerd onderstel met aangepaste wielophanging, bredere sporing en een aerodynamisch pakket met kenmerkende spoiler en verbrede spatborden.
De test in Monza was bedoeld om ervaring op te doen met circuitafstellingen en om feedback te verzamelen van een topcoureur buiten het reguliere BMW Junior Team. Hoewel Lauda niet deelnam aan het daadwerkelijke WTCC-seizoen van 1987, onderstreepte zijn betrokkenheid het belang dat BMW hechtte aan de ontwikkeling van de E30 M3 als competitieve toerwagen.
