De Audi R10 TDI met startnummer 8 won de 24 uur van Le Mans 2006 voor Audi Sport Team Joest, met Frank Biela, Marco Werner en Emanuele Pirro als rijders. De race werd verreden op 17 en 18 juni 2006 en eindigde voor de #8 na 380 ronden als overall winnaar, vóór de Pescarolo C60 Hybrid #17 en de zuster-Audi R10 #7. De zege was historisch omdat Le Mans voor het eerst werd gewonnen door een auto met dieselmotor.
De R10 TDI was gebouwd rond een 5,5-liter Audi TDI V12 met turbo. Het concept combineerde koppel en efficiëntie met een pakket dat op lange stints moest blijven presteren, ook wanneer verkeer en baantemperaturen de marges kleiner maakten. In 2006 was dat cruciaal, omdat de snelheid aan de kop dicht bij elkaar lag en pituitvoering en betrouwbaarheid het verschil maakten.
De wedstrijd kende een duidelijke strijd tussen Audi en Pescarolo, terwijl de GT-klassen hun eigen duels uitreden. Voor de #8 was het sleutelwoord regelmaat: geen overbodige risico’s, consequent tempo en het beperken van stilstand. Met die aanpak werd de R10 TDI niet alleen winnaar van de race, maar ook het referentiepunt voor een nieuw hoofdstuk in de Le Mans-geschiedenis.
