Tijdens de Lombard RAC Rally 1985 maakte de nieuwe Lancia Delta S4 zijn debuut in het Wereldkampioenschap Rally. Het fabrieksteam Lancia Martini Racing bracht meerdere wagens aan de start, waaronder de auto met startnummer 3 voor Markku Alén en Ilkka Kivimäki. De rally, verreden over 65 klassementsproeven in de natte bossen van Groot-Brittannië, vormde het slotstuk van het seizoen en bleek het ideale toneel voor de lancering van Lancia’s nieuwe Groep B-auto.

De Delta S4 combineerde een 1.8-liter viercilinder motor met zowel turbo als compressor, goed voor circa 480 pk. Dankzij het vierwielaandrijvingssysteem en een lichtgewicht buizenframe-chassis was de auto bijzonder geschikt voor het modderige en gladde Britse terrein. Alén begon sterk en reed consequent in de top drie. Gedurende het evenement wisselde hij van positie met teamgenoot Henri Toivonen en de Peugeot van Timo Salonen. Met constante klassementsproefzeges toonde de Delta S4 zich competitief vanaf de eerste kilometers.

Alén en Kivimäki sloten de rally af op een overtuigende tweede plaats, achter Toivonen en voor Salonen. Daarmee bezette Lancia direct bij het debuut van de Delta S4 zowel de eerste als tweede positie. Het resultaat betekende een grote opsteker voor het team, dat in de aanloop naar het seizoen 1986 een krachtig statement maakte richting de concurrentie in Groep B.
