De Renault RS12 met startnummer 16 werd ingezet door Renault Équipe Elf tijdens de Grand Prix van Frankrijk in 1979. Deze wagen werd bestuurd door de Franse coureur René Arnoux en speelde een belangrijke rol in een van de meest legendarische races uit de Formule 1-geschiedenis. De race op het circuit van Dijon-Prenois werd vooral beroemd door het spectaculaire gevecht tussen Arnoux en Gilles Villeneuve, dat symbool staat voor pure racepassie.
De Renault RS12 werd aangedreven door een 1.5-liter V6-turbomotor met dubbele turbo, die een vermogen van ongeveer 520 pk leverde.
