Tijdens de 24 uur van Le Mans in 1977 verscheen de Porsche 935 met startnummer 40 aan de start, ingezet door het Franse team JMS Racing / ASA Cachia. Deze Groep 5-wagen werd bestuurd door de Amerikaan Peter Gregg en de Fransman Claude Ballot-Léna. Het duo reed een consistente en foutloze race, wat resulteerde in een derde plaats algemeen en een overwinning in de Groep 5-klasse.
De Porsche 935 was uitgerust met een 2.9-liter zescilinder boxermotor met enkele turbo, goed voor circa 630 pk. Met een topsnelheid van bijna 294 km/u op de rechte stukken van het Circuit de la Sarthe, was de wagen een geduchte concurrent. De kenmerkende brede carrosserie, gesloten achterwielkasten en vlakke neuspartij gaven de auto zijn iconische uiterlijk.
Gregg en Ballot-Léna kwalificeerden zich als 16e, maar klommen gedurende de race gestaag naar voren. Na 24 uur en 316 afgelegde ronden eindigden ze slechts 16 ronden achter de winnende Porsche 936 van het fabrieksteam.
