De 12 Hours of Sebring van 1979 werd op 17 maart verreden als tweede manche van het IMSA GT Championship. De wedstrijd eindigde in een volledig door Porsche gedomineerde top vier, maar auto #9 van Dick Barbour Racing trok aan het langste eind. De Porsche 935 van Bob Akin, Rob McFarlin en Roy Woods legde 239 ronden af en won zowel het algemeen klassement als de GTX-klasse. De marge op de als tweede geklasseerde Porsche 935 van Busch Beer Racing bedroeg één ronde.
Die uitslag paste in het beeld van de periode. De Porsche 935 was de Groep 5-racer die Porsche vanaf 1976 ontwikkelde uit de 911 Turbo (930). Het model had een luchtgekoelde, turbogevoede zescilinder boxermotor achterin en groeide in de tweede helft van de jaren zeventig uit tot de maatstaf in IMSA en andere langeafstandskampioenschappen. Sebring 1979 liet dat opnieuw zien: de eerste vier plaatsen gingen allemaal naar een 935.
Voor Dick Barbour Racing was startnummer 9 niet alleen snel, maar vooral effectief over twaalf uur. Waar de pole naar de zusterauto #6 ging, bleef de winnende #9 buiten bereik van grote problemen en maakte de equipe het verschil in wedstrijdritme en betrouwbaarheid. Dat juist Akin, McFarlin en Woods wonnen, gaf de zege extra gewicht: het was geen sprint naar voren, maar een uitgevoerde endurance-race waarin foutloze stints, verkeer en slijtage bepalend waren.
De winst van de 1979 Sebring 12 Hours #9 is daardoor meer dan alleen een uitslagregel. Het was een race die de status van de Porsche 935 in Noord-Amerikaanse endurance-racerij bevestigde en Dick Barbour Racing opnieuw op de voorgrond zette. In een tijdperk waarin klantenteams met fabrieksmateriaal konden winnen, werd deze rood-witte Porsche 935 een van de herkenbare Sebring-winnaars van de late jaren zeventig.
