De Italiaanse Grand Prix van 1993 op Monza werd een belangrijke middag voor Damon Hill en voor startnummer 0. Hill reed de Williams FW15C-Renault vanaf de tweede startplaats en won na 53 ronden de race in 1:17.07,509. Het was zijn derde Grand Prix-zege op rij, na overwinningen in Hongarije en België. Op een circuit waar topsnelheid, remstabiliteit en tractie uit de langzame chicanes allesbepalend waren, hield de Williams opnieuw stand.
Dat startnummer 0 was geen curiositeit zonder achtergrond. Williams was als regerend constructeurskampioen aan 1993 begonnen, maar omdat wereldkampioen Nigel Mansell zijn titel niet verdedigde en naar IndyCar vertrok, werd nummer 1 niet uitgegeven. Alain Prost kreeg daardoor nummer 2 en Damon Hill reed het seizoen met nummer 0. In Monza stond die 0 dus op de neus van de snelste auto van de middag.
De Williams FW15C was in 1993 de maatstaf van de Formule 1. De auto, ontworpen onder leiding van Adrian Newey, combineerde de Renault RS5 V10 met een technisch pakket dat in zijn tijd uitzonderlijk geavanceerd was. Actieve wielophanging, tractiecontrole en verdere elektronische rijhulpen maakten de FW15C tot een van de meest complexe en complete Grand Prix-auto’s van zijn generatie. Op Monza vertaalde zich dat in een lock-out van de eerste startrij: Prost pakte pole in 1:21,179, Hill stond ernaast met 1:21,491.
De race kantelde pas laat. Prost leidde het grootste deel van de wedstrijd, maar viel vijf ronden voor het einde uit met motorpech. Hill nam over en reed gecontroleerd naar de overwinning, met Jean Alesi als tweede voor Ferrari en Michael Andretti als derde in zijn laatste Formule 1-race. Hill zette onderweg ook de snelste raceronde neer in 1:23,575. Daardoor werd de Italiaanse Grand Prix van 1993 niet alleen een Williams-zege, maar ook het moment waarop startnummer 0 definitief een vaste plaats kreeg in de moderne Formule 1-geschiedenis.
