De Zuid-Afrikaanse Grand Prix van 1969 op Kyalami was de openingsrace van het Formule 1-seizoen en meteen een belangrijk ijkpunt voor startnummer 7. Dat nummer hoorde toe aan Jackie Stewart, ingeschreven door Matra International. Stewart reed in Zuid-Afrika met de Matra MS10, aangedreven door de Ford Cosworth DFV V8 en voorzien van Dunlop-banden. De race werd verreden over 80 ronden op 1 maart, onder warme en droge omstandigheden.
Stewart kwalificeerde de auto als vierde met een tijd van 1.20,4. Daarmee stond hij achter Jack Brabham, Jochen Rindt en Denny Hulme, maar wel direct in de groep die de race kon dragen. In een veld waarin de top dicht bij elkaar zat, was dat voldoende uitgangspositie om strategisch geduldig te blijven en toe te slaan zodra de wedstrijd zich begon te ontvouwen.
In de race groeide nummer 7 uit tot de maatstaf. Stewart won niet alleen de Grand Prix, maar noteerde ook de snelste ronde met 1.21,6 in ronde 50. Na 80 ronden kwam hij als winnaar over de finish in 1:50:39.1, met Graham Hill op achttien tellen als tweede en Denny Hulme als derde. Voor Stewart was het een overwinning die direct richting gaf aan het seizoen 1969, waarin hij later zijn eerste wereldtitel zou behalen. Voor Matra was het bovendien een bevestiging dat de combinatie van het Franse chassis, de Cosworth-motor en Tyrrells teamorganisatie direct competitief was.
Juist daarom heeft de Zuid-Afrikaanse Grand Prix van 1969 een vaste plaats in de geschiedenis van startnummer 7. Het was geen anonieme openingsrace, maar een wedstrijd waarin Stewart meteen liet zien dat hij en Matra klaar waren om het kampioenschap te dragen. De auto was nog de MS10 en niet de latere MS80, maar het resultaat was al beslissend van toon: pole bleef buiten bereik, de overwinning niet.
