De Grand Prix van Japan van 1976 werd op 24 oktober verreden op het circuit van Fuji en besliste het wereldkampioenschap Formule 1. In zware regenval ging de race van start, maar de omstandigheden zorgden al in de openingsfase voor discussie. Niki Lauda stapte na enkele ronden uit vanwege het slechte zicht, terwijl James Hunt bleef rijden en zijn titelkansen levend hield.
Met startnummer 4 verscheen Patrick Depailler aan de start in de Tyrrell P34 Ford, de zeswielige Formule 1-auto die dat seizoen het onderscheidende technische concept van Tyrrell vormde. De P34 werd aangedreven door de 3,0 liter Ford Cosworth DFV V8, gemonteerd achterin het smalle chassis. De vier kleine voorwielen moesten de luchtweerstand verminderen en tegelijkertijd het remvermogen en de mechanische grip aan de voorzijde verbeteren.
Depailler reed een gecontroleerde wedstrijd in moeilijke omstandigheden. Waar een groot deel van het veld te maken kreeg met spinnen, uitval en wisselende strategieën rond banden en zicht, wist de Fransman zijn Tyrrell naar de finish te brengen. Hij eindigde als zesde, goed voor één punt in het kampioenschap. Daarmee sloot Tyrrell het seizoen af met een resultaat in een race die vooral herinnerd wordt om de titelstrijd.
De race werd uiteindelijk gewonnen door Mario Andretti in de Lotus 77, maar de aandacht ging na afloop vooral uit naar James Hunt, die met een derde plaats voldoende punten behaalde om wereldkampioen te worden. Voor Depailler en Tyrrell betekende Fuji 1976 een slotakkoord van een seizoen waarin de P34 zijn potentieel had laten zien, maar ook de grenzen van het zeswielconcept duidelijk werden.
