De Grand Prix van Japan 1976 op Fuji Speedway werd verreden onder omstandigheden die het kampioenschap zouden beslissen. Aanhoudende regen en een natte baan zorgden voor twijfel bij meerdere coureurs. In dat decor stond startnummer 3 aan de start met Patrick Depailler in de zeswielige Tyrrell P34-Ford voor Tyrrell Racing Organisation.
De Tyrrell P34 was technisch afwijkend binnen het Formule 1-veld. De auto beschikte over vier kleine voorwielen en twee achterwielen, met als doel een kleiner frontaal oppervlak en meer mechanische grip aan de voorzijde. Aandrijving kwam van de Ford Cosworth DFV V8, een 3,0 liter motor die in deze periode door vrijwel het hele veld werd gebruikt. In combinatie met het zeswielconcept moest dat zorgen voor stabiliteit en tractie, met name op circuits waar remmen en insturen bepalend waren.
De wedstrijd op Fuji begon in zware regenval. Het zicht was beperkt en de omstandigheden leidden tot discussies over veiligheid. Meerdere coureurs, onder wie titelkandidaat Niki Lauda, besloten de race vroegtijdig te verlaten. Depailler bleef rijden en wist zich gedurende de wedstrijd in de middenmoot te handhaven, zonder grote fouten in de verraderlijke omstandigheden.
Na de volledige raceafstand werd Depailler met startnummer 3 als zesde geklasseerd. Daarmee pakte hij een punt voor Tyrrell in een race die vooral herinnerd wordt vanwege de weersomstandigheden en de beslissing van het wereldkampioenschap. Voor Depailler en de Tyrrell P34 betekende het resultaat een solide afsluiting van het seizoen, in een wedstrijd waarin uitrijden al een prestatie op zich was.
